Today I was at the supermarket and I was given a paper bag to take my groceries home in. Still charged 10 cents each which is irritating, but not what really frustrated me. The paper bag was covered in all this communication about how trees are sustainable and for every tree used for paper two or more are planted in its place. This is a super simplistic message that is not accurate. Every time a tree is cut down the entire lifespan of that tree is gone; you can not replace something that has grown for 100 years overnight. You can put something new in its place but it will affect the soil, nutrients, light, eco system etc and it is not a like for like replacement. Telling consumers that going paper is going tree is a ridiculous statement that lets consumers think this is the only option and that they are helping the planet with the bag. Saying it is compostable renewable and recyclable is also not entirely accurate.... it is in fact greenwashing when an incorrect statement is made as fact regarding sustainability. Plastic and metal and glass also do it so this is not the material that is too blame but the retailer who is giving false or incorrect information to their customers.
